March 2025 brought a shake-up to the best-sellers list in India’s passenger vehicle market. The Hyundai Creta reclaimed its top spot from the Maruti Fronx, which dropped sharply down to tenth position. Hatchbacks like the Maruti Swift and Tata Punch moved up the rankings, while SUVs continued to dominate the sales charts. Here’s a detailed breakdown of how the top 15 models performed last month.

Market Movers

Hyundai took the top position with the Creta, selling 18,059 units in March. This includes both the ICE and EV versions. With a month-on-month (MoM) growth of over 10 percent and a similar year-on-year (YoY) growth, the Creta showed strong demand across variants. Its well-rounded package and recent updates likely helped push it back to the top.

Right behind was the Maruti Swift, climbing up to second with 17,746 units sold. That’s a YoY growth of 13 percent, a strong showing for a hatchback in an SUV-focused market. The Swift continues to be one of the most reliable performers in Maruti’s lineup.

Tata’s Punch, now available in both petrol and electric variants, grabbed the third spot with 17,714 units. It posted a notable MoM growth of over 21 percent, as more buyers seem to be considering it as a compact and practical urban SUV.

Consistent Performers

The Maruti Wagon R followed closely, registering 17,175 units. Though it saw a MoM drop of 13 percent, it retained its reputation as a high-volume hatchback. Maruti’s tall-boy remains the most purchased hatchback for the financial year.

The Maruti Ertiga, India’s popular MPV, reported sales of 16,804 units, a 13 percent jump in both MoM and YoY numbers. With practical 7-seater usability, the Ertiga continues to attract large families and fleet buyers.

In the SUV race, Maruti Brezza and Tata Nexon held strong at sixth and seventh positions respectively. Brezza clocked 16,546 units with 7.5 percent MoM growth. Meanwhile, Nexon crossed 16,300 units, marking a healthy MoM rise of nearly 7 percent and a 16 percent YoY bump. Both models benefit from their ICE and EV versions.

The Maruti Dzire saw a small MoM gain of 5 percent, reaching 15,460 units. However, it experienced a 3 percent YoY drop, highlighting the gradual decline in sedan popularity.

Ups and Downs

Mahindra’s Scorpio (including the Scorpio N) posted 13,913 units, with a slight MoM increase of 2 percent but an 8 percent YoY decline. It’s still a solid seller but clearly showing signs of saturation.

The biggest drop came from the Maruti Fronx, which led the charts in February but fell to tenth in March with 13,669 units. That’s a sharp MoM fall of 36 percent, despite a 9 percent YoY improvement.

Maruti Baleno also declined with 12,357 units, a 20 percent MoM drop and a 21 percent YoY fall from March 2024. With growing competition, the once-best-selling premium hatch is losing steam.

Hyundai Venue continued to perform steadily, selling 10,441 units. It saw modest MoM and YoY growth of around 3 and 9 percent respectively.

Maruti’s Grand Vitara dropped slightly to 10,418 units. Both MoM and YoY sales slipped by 2 and 7 percent. Meanwhile, the Eeco saw a steeper fall, down to 10,409 units, marking negative MoM and YoY trends.

Rounding out the list is the Maruti Alto K10, with 9,867 units. Although it couldn’t cross the 10,000 mark, it posted a positive MoM growth of 15.5 percent and a YoY increase of 6 percent.

While SUVs continue to dominate Indian roads, hatchbacks like the Swift and Wagon R are still holding their ground. However, sedans are clearly fading from the spotlight, with the Dzire being the only one in the top 15. Maruti continues to dominate with eight models in the list, but Hyundai and Tata are not far behind with their strong SUV lineups.
